Managed macOS updates rolling out to eligible computers

To ensure that university technology is kept up-to-date and secure, Information Services and Technology (IST) will begin implementing operating system updates on Apple computers through Kandji, beginning May 13.

Kandji is a Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform that is used to manage Apple computers at the university. It has the capability to install and update applications, enforce operating system updates, and apply policies to your computer. Not every faculty or staff member with an Apple computer has Kandji installed on their device, but those who do have a small bee icon in their menu bar. It provides notifications on software that requires updating and affords users the agency to defer the update for a certain period of time depending on the application/software, or update immediately.

How will this affect me?
Currently, this change will only affect faculty and staff with Apple users enrolled in Kandji. However, IST does have a phased plan that will see all eligible university Apple computers enrolled in Kandji eventually, and all new Apple computers purchased through the university will be automatically enrolled.

Why are we moving to managed OS updates?
Kandji has the capability to enforce operating system (OS) updates, known as managed OS updates. This feature ensures the operating system on your computer is kept up to date, safe and secure, as well as running efficiently and effectively.

What do you need to do?
Whenever your system has to install an OS update, ensure it is plugged in and connected to the internet to be able to install the update. For minor updates (e.g. going from macOS 14.1 to macOS 14.3) the update process typically takes around 15 to 20 minutes. For major updates (e.g. going from macOS 13 to macOS 14) the process can take up to several hours, usually faster on newer computers. In either case the system will need to restart during the update process and will be unavailable during that period.
