An interactive learning experience

i>clickers are an in-classroom solution used to increase student engagement and participation during lectures. Use i>clickers to poll students to assess understanding of course material, take attendance or liven discussions by gathering additional responses.

When are i>clickers used in the classroom?

i>clickers are used by instructors to supplement classroom instruction and encourage students to participate throughout the lecture. Instructors can poll students during a lecture to determine if course material is understood or use it as a tool to encourage students to provide personal opinion and perspective on course materials.

What does an i>clicker setup consist of?

The i>clicker system consists of a receiver, instructor blue remote, student remotes, and software stored on a usb key. i>clicker base stations are installed in most of the Smart classrooms on the U of A campus. Instructors register their course with the bookstore for students to purchase their remotes and to obtain an instructor remote. Instructors then download the i>clicker software, store it on a personal USB key, and bring it to their SMART classroom for lectures. The software 'floats' on top of any application so you can use the presentation software of your choice to deliver questions. If desired, polling results can displayed on-screen in a number of graphical formats.

As a student, will I be using an i>clicker in class?

i>clickers are used by some instructors in the classroom to encourage student participation. Though they are used in a few faculties and departments, they are not required in all classes. If your particular instructor will be using an i>clicker, they will usually announce at the beginning of class or indicate on the class syllabus an i>clicker will be needed.

I'm an instructor, how can I start using i>clickers in class?

If you are interested in using i>clickers in class we recommend first verifying that your classroom is configured for i>clicker use. Once verified, you can proceed to order remotes through the University Bookstore for your particular course. This will ensure the Bookstore has enough i>clickers on hand to meet campus needs and an adequate supply for your course.

If your classroom is not configured and you would like to use i>clickers, contact IST at 780-492-9400 or ist@ualberta.ca to inquire whether a unit can be installed.

What are the frequencies of the classrooms?

If you are in a classroom without a posted frequency, the room should be set to the frequency AA.

The following list contains rooms which are configured for use of i>clickers and their assigned frequencies:
