Starting September 5, 2017, most labs will be open 24/7 excluding statutory holidays and university closures. This does exclude labs located in libraries, as well as ECHA, which are not open 24/7.

Please see Lab Details for the availability of specific locations.

You can find a diagram showing the basic layout of technology in labs and classrooms here.

A wide range of labs and classrooms are located all across the university; different sizes, layouts, locations and more are available for your use. Take a look at the lab details to find one close to you!

Each lab computer is installed with a standard set of software including Microsoft Office 2010, Internet Explorer, Firefox, SPSS, Adobe Creative Cloud and plug-ins.

Instructors are responsible for checking that the reserved lab has the required software installed. In the event different software is required, a request must be made a minimum of two weeks in advance to the reserved time, and one month for September start of class installs. Please note that installation of any beta, trial, or demo software is not allowed.

All labs are equipped with printers that offer printing on standard 8.5 x 11" paper. For information on printing costs, procedures, and locations, please visit the ONEcard website.

If you are using basic programs that do not need an internet connection, a login is not necessary. Otherwise, logging in is simple; enter your CCID and password to instantly connect to programs needing an internet connection.

External organizations who are renting our labs may obtain temporary network access IDs at the start of the course which provide access to any of the above programs.

All GFC approved University of Alberta courses can use the labs at no cost. If additional software or rentals are required, fees may apply.

If you are visiting from other educational institutions, the following fees will apply:
1 day = $500/day; 3-5 days = $400/day; 1 week+ = $350/day***

If you are visiting from an external organization, the following fees will apply:
1 day = $1000/day; 3-5 days = $800/day; 1 week+ = $700/day***

*** plus $110 per hour for software installation/removal and/or on-site technical analyst presence

In an effort to protect the equipment, students and instructors are asked to not bring food and/or drinks into the labs.

Hardware Support

By maintaining equipment on campus and procuring custom technology solutions, Hardware Support ensures you always deliver your message effectively.

Our goal is to provide you with the best mechanisms available in order for you to effectively share your message. To meet this goal IST provides a wide range of services to campus which include room enhancements, hardware installs, repairs, ongoing maintenance, and provides one-on-one needs assessments to develop technology solutions for your specific needs.

During a needs consultation our team of experts will meet with you, and together, determine what tools are needed for you to most effectively deliver your message. We’ll discuss the technical requirements for the classroom, lab, or meeting room at hand and work with you to stay within budget.

You can contact us through our contact form. Just let us know what you are looking for, or the kind of support you need, and we’ll be sure to assign someone to your request.

In most labs and classrooms you will find an array of projectors, computers, monitors, input panels, AMX Touchpanels, DVD/BluRay/VCR, sound systems and microphones. For specific details on what is in our centrally booked labs, view our Lab Details page.

There are five basic steps to achieving your classroom technology goals.

The process begins with the Concept step. During this initial phase we gather the requirements depending on what you would like to do in the room. Second, is Procurement, during which our team will source and purchase all the necessary supplies and equipment. Third, is Installation, where our team of experts put together all the supplies and equipment necessary to build a room catered to you. Fourth, is the all important Testing step, where we examine all the equipment to verify it is properly functioning and running as it should. Finally, our team steps into the Education phase. During this time, we take on the role of educators to train instructors and department members on how the classroom, lab, or meeting room works, as well as how to use the technology effectively to share their message.

Yes. We offer various custom teaching solutions to meet your needs. One such example being a collaboration room. A collaboration room allows for multi-device presentations to be shown through one display/projector. This setup allows you to connect on various laptops/desktops to collaborate with group members, give presentations or teach from various sources.

We also provide dual screen projection. This setup allows you to show the problem on one screen and collaboratively work together live on an adjacent screen.

To receive after hours support, send an email to ist@ualberta.ca or through the contact form. Let us know what you need support with and where you are located and we’ll be sure to get someone to assist.
