Whether you’re unsure of how to use the technology in a classroom or lab, or you’re interested in trying something new with your class, IST is here to assist you. We offer a variety of services for your classroom, both onsite and remotely, including:

  • Assistance and training with in room technology
  • Assistance and training with remote/online class tools
  • Equipment loans including webcams and microphones
  • Assistance and training on audio/video/web conferencing
  • Lab preparation for exams

What are your hours?

Centrally scheduled labs on campus are now open for the Fall 2021 term. Please check out the Lab Details listing for specific hours of operation.

How are labs/classrooms setup?

Where are the labs located?
A wide range of labs and classrooms are located all across the university; different sizes, layouts, locations and more are available for your use. Take a look at the lab details to find one close to you!
What software is available on lab and classroom computers?

Each lab computer is installed with a standard set of software including Microsoft Office 2010, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and SPSS. If additional software is required, be sure to contact us for more information. Installation charges may apply for on-site support.

Instructors are responsible for verifying that the reserved lab has the required software installed. We can provide support for anyone using a space that doesn’t currently have the operating system you need installed. Contact the Staff Service Centre to get started and be sure to know what operating system you are most comfortable with, as well as any other software or hardware requirements you have. A request must be made a minimum of two weeks in advance of the reserved date, and one month for September start of class installs. Please note that installation of any beta, trial, or demo software is not allowed.

Can I print in the labs?
All labs are equipped with printers that offer printing on standard 8.5" x 11" paper. For information on printing costs, procedures, and locations, please visit the ONEcard website.
How do I log onto the computer?

If you are using basic programs that do not need an Internet connection, a login is not necessary. Otherwise, logging in is simple; enter your CCID and password to instantly connect to programs that require an Internet connection.

External organizations who are renting lab space may obtain temporary network access IDs at the start of the course which provide access to any of the software detailed above.

Is there a cost for using the labs?

All General Faculties Council approved University of Alberta courses can use the labs at no cost. If additional software or rentals are required, fees may apply.

If you are visiting from other educational institutions, the following fees will apply:

  • 1 day = $500/day
  • 3-5 days = $400/day
  • 1 week+ = $350/day***

If you are visiting from an external organization, the following fees will apply:

  • 1 day = $1000/day
  • 3-5 days = $800/day
  • 1 week+ = $700/day***

*** plus $110 per hour for software installation/removal and/or on-site technical analyst presence.

Can I bring food into the labs?
In an effort to protect the equipment, food and drinks are not permitted in the labs.
What are the basic features of a technology enhanced classroom?

All of our technology enhanced classrooms are equipped with the same standard setup and software, which includes:

  • Google Earth
  • Microsoft Office 2010
  • Multimedia Players: FLV Player, Quicktime, RealPlayer, VLC Player, Winamp, Windows Media Player
  • PDF Readers: Adobe Reader, Foxit Reader
  • Skype
  • Web Browsers: Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox
  • Write-N-Cite
How can I book a technology enhanced classroom?
All of our classrooms are technology enhanced classrooms! To book, visit the Office of the Registrar's classroom bookings to reserve a centrally scheduled room.
Who do I contact if I’m having issues with lab or classroom technology?

Contact the Staff Service Centre.

Do you provide support for exams and testing?

For in-person exams, we provide pre-exam checks, upon request, in which we will verify that all of the computers and equipment is running properly prior to your testing date. This service comes at no additional cost, but be sure to engage us at least 48 business hours in advance of your exam.

During online exams, we now provide first-tier phone support for issues related to Zoom, Remote Proctor, and Smart Exam Monitor. Students and instructors can call 780-492-9332 to talk to an analyst during regular University business hours. Second-tier concerns will be escalated to the eClass team.

What is in a hybrid classroom?
A hybrid Classroom is equipped with a computer, document camera, projector/display, microphone and a webcam that is connected to the room computer.
