Unbeaten Warriors

In the fight against cybercrime, Harvinder Singh Dhami and the rest of the IST Security Team are on the frontline. From catching phishing attacks to finding loopholes in the University’s IT infrastructure, Harvinder spends every day keeping us cybersecure.

“We are unbeaten warriors,” says Harvinder. “We get challenged by threats that have never been seen before, and we have to stop them before anyone at the University is affected.”

Since starting as an IT Security Analyst in August,  Harvinder has been focused on managing firewalls, vulnerability assessments, incident responses, and security investigations in the University’s information systems. According to Harvinder, “Security is everyone’s concern, but it’s our job. My whole career has been cybersecurity, and if you don’t have a passion for it, you can’t work a 9-5 job.”

Harvinder first became interested in cybersecurity during the third year of his engineering degree, when he assessed the security of his university and found numerous vulnerabilities. After obtaining his Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology, Harvinder went on to become a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), a Certified Ethical Hacker, and he’s almost finished his Master’s in IT Security. He held positions with high-level organizations like the Government of India and Cisco before joining the U of A.

So far, Harvinder says he’s been struck by the diversity of IST and the scope of work handled by the department. “IST is the heart of the university,” he claims, “because everything — every service — depends on information, services, and technology. We’re at the heart of all of it.”
