Start: 2017/07/07 14:00 - IST analysts reported a power outage at College Plaza, Campus Tower & Campus Saint-Jean was affecting all IT services. EPCOR began investigating.
2017/07/07 15:00 - Power has been restored to all locations. Most of the affected IT services were restored, one server remained unavailable and was investigated why it did not start after power restoration.

Modifier change

The switches that provide network connectivity in the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) will undergo maintenance. The affected users within CCIS may be intermittently unable to connect to network resources. The service degradation is expected to last for four hours.

Modifier change

The AirWatch environment, the Mobile Device Management application, will be upgraded to version 9.1.  During the change, AirWatch users can expect the following:

  • Admin users will not be able to log into the Web Console
  • New device users will not be able to enroll
  • Existing device users will not be able to access the VMware AirWatch® App Catalog or Self Service portal
  • Existing content in VMware AirWatch® Content Locker™ will continue to be accessible, however, new content will not be available

Start: 2017/05/29 11:10 - Monitoring tools detected servers hosting eClass, the university's online learning platform, became unavailable. IST began investigating
2017/05/29 11:20 - Investigation determined the issue was the result of a network outage.

Servers used by the Andrew File System (AFS) file service will be taken off-line for security updates. AFS users will be unable to access their file space during these updates. The service outage is expected to last for up to 5 hours.

Service Outage: Network Resources North Campus Central All Users - 2017/05/28 - 12:35

Outage resolution

Start: 2017/05/28 8:30 - Monitoring systems detected a number of network devices became unavailable which resulted in a loss of some network resources around campus. IST support analysts began investigating.
2017/05/28 11:30 - Users in the following buildings were being affected by the outage: Arts and Convocation Hall, South Academic Building, Cameron Library, Central Academic Building, Dentistry Pharmacy
2017/05/28 14:00 - Root cause was determined to be emergency power failing to start after routine planned power maintenance. IST needed to wait for physical building repairs to be completed before the affected network devices could be restored.

Multiple servers will undergo routine maintenance and receive security updates performed by Information Services and Technology (IST). During the change, users will be unable to reach the services listed below:  

 

  • My CCID Portal which allows users to change their passwords

  • The CCID ToolBox that provides administrative services for the CCID interface

  • The Enterprise Documents and Records Management System (EDRMS)

  • OnTheHub UA Software Distribution Service that provides software downloads

  • The Information Services and Technology (IST) Website

  • The Learning Shop which lists learning opportunities for all Academic and Support Staff across the University of Alberta

  • The Central Login Service, also known as GPU (General Purpose Unix)

  • UAOpenCart, a financial application which offers services to Clients for External Business Transactions.

Outage resolution

Start: 2017/05/24 12:00 - Monitoring tools detected several servers hosting various IT services had become unavailable due to a power issue in the General Service Building Data Center. IST began investigating
2017/05/24 12:30 - Most the affected IT services were restored by connecting to alternate power supplies. Samba shares were still being impacted.  
2017/05/24 13:25 - Samba shares were restored. Monitoring began to see if any further issues were reported.

Outage resolution

Start: 2017/05/23 16:15 - IST received reports of a power outage affecting North Campus. Monitoring systems detected a number of network devices had become unavailable which resulted in a loss of some IT services around campus. 
2017/05/23 17:55 - IST received confirmation power has been restored. IT services were mosty restored, a few network devices were damaged by the power surge and were needing repairs.
End: 2017/05/24 08:15 - The affected network devices have been repaired to restore service. Service was confirmed restored.
