Update (July 7, 2017): based on feedback from users, Google has decided to delay the launch of the Backup and Sync tool while they make some additional improvements to the product. Google is planning to launch Backup and Sync next week (July 12) but please be advised that this date is subject to change.
On June 28th, 2017, Google Backup and Sync will be available for use by UAlberta G Suite users. Though available, Google recommends non-consumers (e.g. UAlberta G Suite accounts) continue to use Drive for Mac/PC until the new enterprise-focused solution, Drive File Stream, is made available later this year. The Drive File Stream application provides a new way to access all of your Google Drive files directly from a Mac or PC, without using up all your disk space (no syncing required).
Backup and Sync is a tool intended for consumers to help back up files and photos from their computers, so they’re safe and accessible from anywhere. Backup and Sync is the next iteration of Google Drive for Mac/PC, which is now integrated with the Google Photos desktop uploader. Backup and Sync is primarily intended and designed for consumer users.
If you have Drive for Mac/PC already installed, the Backup and Sync application will not automatically be upgraded. More information about Backup and Sync will be made available after June 28th.
