Updated as of August 15, 2017

To ensure our campus community is well prepared for the coming year, IST spent this summer performing necessary upgrades to University lab and classroom computers. Here’s what you can expect before you get ready for the Fall semester.

Updates to IST Public Computer Labs and Classroom Podium Computers

Your security is one of the University of Alberta’s top priorities. As an institution dedicated to the public good, the University’s teaching facilities are public in nature, which means we need to take extra precautions to keep our information safe.

  1. Removal of Administrative Access

Thousands of people use the University’s computers every day. In order to minimize risk, administrative access will be removed from all IST-managed workstations starting on Monday, August 21, 2017. Going forward, only IST staff will be able to install software, drivers, or other programs onto classroom podium, lab instructor, or student computers.

Please verify that the software you require for instruction are installed on the workstations and are working after the August 21 implementation date.

If you require software installed on a University lab or classroom computer, please contact IST to request installation well in advance of your first class.
  2. CCID Authentication for Labs and Classrooms

IST has postponed implementing CCID authentication to classroom podium computers and IST-managed computer labs due to unforeseen technical difficulties within our legacy infrastructure. IST will work to implement this function at a later date in our teaching spaces. However, IST may proceed with implementing CCID authentication in the Cameron Library Knowledge Common for the Fall term as a pilot site.
  3. Daily Cleaning of Temporary Storage Locations

Effective August 21, 2017, IST will begin performing daily maintenance to remove all non-essential and user data files from the D: Drive. You can keep your materials safe by storing them on an encrypted USB memory stick or Google Drive, instead of on the D: Drive.
  4. Removal of AFS File Services

Effective, August 21, 2017, legacy AFS file services will no longer be accessible from IST-managed classroom podium computers or computer labs.

To maintain access to your files, you are encouraged to store them on encrypted USB memory sticks or Google Drive.
  5. Change of Authentication Icon

Effective, August 21, the authentication icon in labs and classrooms will be changed to an unlocked padlock. See below:

Updates to IST Managed Classroom Podium Computers

Starting Monday, August 21, all classroom podium workstations will be upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact IST at 780-492-9400 or ist@ualberta.ca.

IST has been busy updating audio visual technology in eleven smart classrooms this summer. Classroom podium workstations and audio visual evergreening will continue into the Fall 2017 term. We will focus on replacing workstations throughout campus that have exhibited technical incidents that warrant replacement on a priority basis.

New Hours of Operation for Select IST-Managed Computer Labs

Effective September 5, 2017, many computer labs across will be open 24/7 except on statutory holidays and holiday closures. Access to each lab will be governed by building hours.

For more detailed information, please see the IST Lab Details page.

Updates to IST Public Labs Scheduling

Bookings for IST public labs are now handled by the Examination and Timetabling (ETT) unit of the Registrar’s Office. For more information, please visit the ETT’s website or contact the Registrar’s Office at 780-492-3113.

Removal of Software Search from IST Website

IST has removed the software lookup tool for labs from the IST website as the information was out of date and challenging to maintain.

IST is working on developing a replacement tool that will leverage dynamic data. We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you have any questions about software availability in labs, please contact IST at 780-492-9400 or ist@ualberta.ca
